Steven is a recently diagnosed autistic adult from Newtownabbey. He has recently received support from our Autistic Adult Support Officer.
I recently received my autism diagnosis at 26 years old. Autism NI have really supported me, and I received 3 sessions with the Autistic Adult Support Officer. Each session provided me with a lot of help and advice, especially around letting things go and not focusing so much on everything having to be perfect all the time.Autism acceptance to me means being taken seriously, even if my traits aren’t as prominent as others. I believe it’s important for people to understand more about the social barriers that I face especially in relationships with others. This can be very challenging, because I struggle to understand my own emotions, and the emotions of others.I think sometimes people find it hard to imagine what it’s like to have a mind like mine, so they’re less likely to help or don’t know how to help. However, “being kind to different minds” to me means accepting me for who I am and if you think I’m struggling, don’t assume I can figure it out on my own. A one-minute conversation could save me one week of overthinking on my own.Steven, Autistic Adult
