Kathy is a recently diagnosed autistic woman and member of our Autistic Adults Peer Network.
After years of waiting, I was in my early 50’s when I was diagnosed in 2020. I remember my childhood as a very unhappy time, mostly because I never really knew what was going on around me and in those days, there was little knowledge of autistic people. In any activities that involved socialising with other people I was completely mute. My parents thought I was just 'odd' and very shy, but the truth is that I had lots going on my mind. I had a lot to say, but I just couldn't speak. They call it selective mutism. When I received my diagnosis, it was like a veil had lifted and I finally knew who I was, and I was granted the freedom to be me.
I am an authentic human. I have empathic skills that I gained from early childhood and over years of figuring out what was going on around me. I don't feel obliged to fit into society and I would say I'm a free spirit. Currently I am studying Art and I enjoy creating beautiful things for people to enjoy, and being autistic gives me freedom to be happy in my own self.
For support, I often get advice from Autism NI's Helpline. They are fantastic and are great champions for autistic people. I also had 3 sessions with their Support Officer, which was absolutely amazing! She supported and helped me realise sensory issues going on in my body. I am also part of their Online Peer Network which is supportive to join in and listen and I don't feel isolated.
Autism NI is one of the best organisations I've ever come across. I don't know what I would do without them.
