Cheryl shares what Christmas is like for her and her family.

As a family we all love and look forward to Christmas and spending precious time together, but there are so many pressures now with social media and advertising to have the ‘picture perfect’ Christmas that it can be very overwhelming not just for the kids but for the parents as well. A trip to visit Santa can turn into sensory overload, feelings of anxiety and general upset caused by crowds and queuing. This turns what is meant to be an enjoyable experience into a family nightmare. There is much more choice now though with most places offering sensory sessions and quiet Santa’s, but I generally still find these visits quite difficult as it is out of the daily routine. Even the change in the house with the decorations up causes anxiety, Christmas plays at school and the general feeling of rushing around, shopping, presents, visiting family, and parties can be too much.My children would find the build up to Christmas day difficult as it is the waiting and the need for it to happen, the same with birthdays can be difficult as they feel the pressure and often it is a relief when the big day comes and is over just to get back to the routine – routine make everyone feel ‘safe and secure’. Things neurotypical families enjoy and take for granted can be very difficult for families like my own, such as unwrapping presents, Christmas movies, Tv and music can all cause distress because again it is just too overwhelming. I used to feel like it was my fault that my kids got upset but I know now that I just need to do things differently such as spreading the gifts out over a couple of days as opening too many presents at once is just too much. Supporting Autism NI at Christmas is very important to me and I would encourage everyone who can to support it, as this will directly support autism services and the work of Autism NI's Helpline. As a parent of 3 children with additional needs I must admit it is difficult to find time to switch off and relax but it's a comfort knowing that Autism NI is available to provide any resources or support I need. We look forward to attending our local family support group Christmas party at Lisburn Leisureplex where the children can have fun without fear of being judged and parents are with other like-minded parents offering support and guidance.
