Christine is a parent of an autistic daughter who has been supported through our Mental Health and Autism Project.
My daughter, Ava, is 14 years old and received her autism diagnosis when she was four years old. Autism NI's Mental Health and Autism Project has been an invaluable lifeline for Ava. Ava was unable to attend school due to social, emotional and mental health challenges, and we received support from Autism NI's Life Skills Officer (LSO). The LSO built an incredible relationship of trust and respect with Ava, tailoring her approach to Ava’s communication preferences and needs.Ava had the opportunity to avail of equine therapy, which she adored and found so valuable in emotional regulation. Ava also has continued to foster her social skills with friendships forged in small groups, learning together about online safety and a monthly meet up with other autistic young people. Autism NI's Mental Health and Autism Project has enabled Ava to learn about and embrace her autistic identity, develop self esteem and confidence, and navigate friendships. It was a huge boost to her confidence to have her artwork selected to feature on Autism NI’s thank you cards, and we were delighted to repay this wonderful experience by raising money for the charity with the Glow Walk in November.Christine, Parent
