TIM’S STORY

Tim is a recently diagnosed autistic adult from Belfast.

“After years of waiting, I received my autism diagnosis in October 2022 when I was 49 years old. At times I find myself easily overloaded if I have a lot of information to think about. It’s important for me to take a pause and self-regulate to stop me from getting too overwhelmed. Getting my diagnosis has helped me understand myself more and get the right support for me.

I am an empathetic person, I have a sensitivity to other people’s emotions and my environment, and for me this would be one of my greatest strengths. I enjoy growing and collecting plants, it is relaxing and a way to de-stress as you can see the plants grow and thrive when they are taken care of.

For support, Autism NI has been great at helping me and providing advice and a space to talk. I first heard about Autism NI through a google search, and I have learnt so much from the team. I have been given help with work and they even provided a letter of support on my behalf – this really made such a difference to me. I attend the Autistic Adult Peer Network and it has been great getting to know other people. We can share knowledge and experience and encourage each other.

Autism isn’t an illness and it’s something never to apologise for. I believe we are all different and everyone should be accepted for who they are.”
